[From Series Two The Flying Years]
Frederick John Niven was born in Chile in 1878 of Scottish parents. His family returned to Scotland when he was five years old. A visit to family friends in British Columbia in the late 1890’s began the development of his interest in writing. He travelled considerably in Canada and his experiences subsequently found their way into his books. His first novel, The Lost Cabin Mine, was published in 1908, and thereafter he produced many books and articles. In 1920, Niven brought his bride to Canada and they settled near Nelson in British Columbia. He died in 1943 in Vancouver.
