NCL Biography:

David Adams Richards was born in Newcastle, New Brunswick, in 1950. After attending St. Thomas University in Fredericton for three years, he turned his fulltime attention to writing. From 1983 to 1987 he was writer-in-residence at the University of New Brunswick, later accepting similar positions, for shorter periods of time, at other universities.

Richards creates his fictional universe out of his native Miramichi River Valley in northern New Brunswick. His characters, usually of the working class, struggle to preserve their moral courage and their dignity in a world increasingly displaced by economic and social changes. Their sometimes violent lives hide, though never completely, the generosity, tenderness, and love in their many relationships.

David Adams Richards resides in Saint John, New Brunswick.
