Aritha van Herk came to international attention when, at the age of twenty-four, she won the Seal Books $50,000 First Novel Award for Judith. She also received the Alberta Achievement Award in Literature for 1978.
Raised on a farm in central Alberta, van Herk was educated at the University of Alberta, where she received her MA in English. At various times she has worked as a farm hand, tractor driver, secretary, researcher, teacher, editor, and bush cook. Her second novel, The Tent Peg, was published in 1981.
