John Steffler was born in Toronto, Ontario, in 1947. He took his B.A. (1971) at the University of Toronto and his M.A. (1974) at the University of Guelph. In 1975 he accepted a teaching position in Corner Brook, Newfoundland, at Sir Wilfred Grenfell College, Memorial University, where he is now Professor of English.
In his poetry Steffler often examines the multifaceted life of Newfoundland with its coves, peoples , and all-but-abandoned communities. Looking at the world through his eyes gives an enlarged sense of the natural world and its relationship to humanity.
In The Afterlife of George Cartwright (1992), his first novel, he resurrects the life of the restless renegade who seeks to explore the new world and make therein a life for himself.
John Steffler resides in Maberly, Ontario.
